The AGLC Regulated Market: What Alberta Bettors Need to Know

How Alberta's Regulated Sportsbook Market Works

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is the provincial authority responsible for Alberta's incoming regulated online sports betting market. Alberta's model is explicitly modelled on Ontario's successful AGCO/iGO framework — the same structure that launched Canada's first regulated private sportsbook market in April 2022 and now serves over 1.5 million registered players.

Under the AGLC framework, licensed operators will be required to hold player funds in segregated accounts, submit to regular independent audits, implement mandated responsible gambling tools, and operate within a formal consumer dispute resolution process — the same protections Ontario bettors currently enjoy. Alberta's minimum legal age for sports betting will be 18+ (Ontario is 19+), reflecting Alberta's existing gambling age for other regulated activities.

The most likely first-wave licensees are the same operators that launched in Ontario on Day 1 in April 2022: DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, bet365, and theScore Bet are widely expected to be among the first books to receive AGLC licences, based on their Ontario operational experience and the infrastructure investments already made in the Canadian market. We will confirm licensees and publish rankings the moment AGLC announcements are made. Read our full AGLC iGaming Standards guide →

Until the AGLC market is live, Alberta bettors have legal access to offshore books licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and Kahnawake Gaming Commission. These are not illegal alternatives — they are legitimately licensed platforms operating under regulatory frameworks that provide meaningful consumer protection. The books listed above are our recommended options for Alberta bettors in the pre-AGLC period.

Alberta Sports Betting — Common Questions

Yes — Alberta bettors can legally access sports betting through licensed offshore sportsbooks (MGA, Kahnawake) right now. Canada's federal Criminal Code does not prohibit Canadians from betting with foreign-licensed online sportsbooks. A fully regulated AGLC market is also coming, which will add provincially-regulated options with stronger consumer protection.
July 13, 2026 is the confirmed AGLC hard deadline for all operators to submit licence applications, pay required fees, and cease unregulated activity. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) sets the official go-live date — all public signals from Minister Dale Nally and AiGC CEO Dan Keene point to mid-July as the market open, before the 2026 NFL season. This page updates the moment licensees are confirmed.
Alberta bettors currently have access to a strong selection of MGA-licensed and Kahnawake-licensed offshore books — including CoolBet (MGA, sharp-book vig), Neo.Bet (MGA, Pinnacle-adjacent pricing), and Bodog (Kahnawake, Canada's original sportsbook since 1994). All are listed and reviewed on this page.
Alberta's minimum gambling age is 18, which will apply to regulated online sportsbooks when the AGLC market launches — making it different from Ontario's 19+ minimum. Current offshore books set their own terms; most require 18+.
Based on Ontario's April 2022 launch, the most likely first-wave AGLC licensees are DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, bet365, and theScore Bet — the same books that launched on Day 1 in Ontario and have the infrastructure and Canadian operational history to move quickly into a new regulated provincial market.
AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) is Ontario's provincial gambling regulator. AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission) is Alberta's equivalent body. Both are provincial regulatory authorities operating under their respective provincial gaming frameworks, but they are separate bodies with separate licensing processes.
Currently, DraftKings and FanDuel are only AGCO-licensed for Ontario. They do not hold licences allowing them to operate in other Canadian provinces before those provinces open regulated markets. Once the AGLC market launches, both are expected to apply for Alberta licences.

Responsible Gambling: If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, contact the Alberta helpline at 1-866-332-2322 (24/7, free, confidential). Offshore books listed on this page are licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) or Kahnawake Gaming Commission — they are not licensed by the AGLC and do not operate under Alberta's provincial regulatory framework. The AGLC regulated market will provide stronger consumer protections when it launches.
