The AGLC Regulated Market: What Alberta Bettors Need to Know
How Alberta's Regulated Sportsbook Market Works
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is the provincial authority responsible for Alberta's incoming regulated online sports betting market. Alberta's model is explicitly modelled on Ontario's successful AGCO/iGO framework — the same structure that launched Canada's first regulated private sportsbook market in April 2022 and now serves over 1.5 million registered players.
Under the AGLC framework, licensed operators will be required to hold player funds in segregated accounts, submit to regular independent audits, implement mandated responsible gambling tools, and operate within a formal consumer dispute resolution process — the same protections Ontario bettors currently enjoy. Alberta's minimum legal age for sports betting will be 18+ (Ontario is 19+), reflecting Alberta's existing gambling age for other regulated activities.
The most likely first-wave licensees are the same operators that launched in Ontario on Day 1 in April 2022: DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, bet365, and theScore Bet are widely expected to be among the first books to receive AGLC licences, based on their Ontario operational experience and the infrastructure investments already made in the Canadian market. We will confirm licensees and publish rankings the moment AGLC announcements are made. Read our full AGLC iGaming Standards guide →
Until the AGLC market is live, Alberta bettors have legal access to offshore books licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and Kahnawake Gaming Commission. These are not illegal alternatives — they are legitimately licensed platforms operating under regulatory frameworks that provide meaningful consumer protection. The books listed above are our recommended options for Alberta bettors in the pre-AGLC period.
