How Ontario's Regulated Market Works
iGaming Ontario: What the AGCO Licence Actually Means for You
On April 4, 2022, Ontario became the first Canadian province to open a regulated private sportsbook market — ending the grey-market era in which Canadians bet legally but without formal consumer protection. Every sportsbook listed on this hub holds a licence from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and operates under a conduct-and-manage agreement with iGaming Ontario (iGO), a subsidiary of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
This framework means several things that matter directly to bettors. Player funds must be held in segregated accounts — your money is separate from the operator's operating capital and is protected even if the operator faces financial difficulties. Every licensed operator is subject to regular independent audits for fair play, RNG compliance, and AML (anti-money laundering) standards. Disputes have a formal resolution pathway through the AGCO rather than requiring you to take an offshore operator at their word. And the full suite of responsible gambling tools — deposit limits, self-exclusion, reality checks — is mandated by regulation, not offered voluntarily.
The practical implication: Ontario bettors are protected in a way that bettors in BC, Alberta (for now), and every other Canadian province are not. That protection has real value and it is the primary reason to prefer an AGCO-licensed book over an offshore alternative for Ontario residents.
